THIRTY-EIGHT

Mcalister turns about in the water. The creatures surround him. They reach out with withered fingers and stroke his nose, his cheeks, pull at his feet. He tries to swim up, but they're above him now too. Half a minute passes, then a minute. He goes to fight through the rabble but they only strengthen their numbers; a wall of gaunt, pale faces. One of the faces is his, he realises. He grabs the thing and looks into its eyes. Even the little scar on his lip is there. He shrinks back, tries to swim in the other direction. Another of the things has his face too, and another — all of them gawping, their lips twisted into snarls. How ugly I am from the outside, he thinks. All pudgy and wide-chinned, British-looking, pastry and chocolate and beer. One of the creatures grabs his shoulders and stares directly into his eyes and roars. The others join in — a hymn. Mcalister screams then, a muffled dirge of bubbles.
